What Colours Could Brighten Your Home

Now that we spend so much time at home it is only natural to look for various ways to make our living environment more lively and welcoming. One great way to do that is by combining different colours and shades to brighten your rooms. It has an amazing impact on your mood and productivity. Here’s what colours you should add to each room to get a specific feeling every time you enter the space.

Your Living Room

The living room is the place where you probably spend the most of your time these days. Good news is summer is coming and to get it even closer you could experiment with touches of sunny yellow and turquoise, aquamarine or sky blue. You don’t have to paint the walls, although if you feel like, why not! Usually just a few new changes or additions to the interior do the trick. Try new couch mini cushions in bright yellow and an aquamarine rug. Bright colours are powerful mood boosters and each of them has the ability to evoke specific feelings and emotions in us.

Not only is yellow the colour of the sun and usually helps people who are prone to depression and low mood episodes, but it also stimulates intelligence. So, if you have to work from your living room and your job requires some creativity and a lot of thinking, here’s one more reason to consider yellow for your surroundings.

Your Kitchen

Maybe this one is obvious, but a top choice for your kitchen would almost always be white if you want it to feel more inviting. White is usually associated with purity and simplicity. And to give it a luxury touch, add black and red. Black has always been the colour of elegance and exclusivity - it may make you feel more like a star masterchef when you are cooking. Red is used by most food businesses because it makes you hungry, especially in combination with yellow! Think about McDonalds logo!

Your Bedrooms

For your bedrooms choose pastel and calming colours to help you relax. Lavender is a great choice! It makes the space look brighter, but at the same time calms your nerves. Purple and its shades are connected to spirituality and mental wellness. If you have the option to paint your walls in pale lilac, we really think you should. Otherwise, get bed linen or a throw in that colour, change your curtains, add some big candles and perhaps a vaze with spring flowers. All these should make you feel a lot more relaxed when you are in your bedroom reading a book or taking a nap.

Your Bathroom

We’ve been advised to not plan any overseas holidays this year. It’s quite unfortunate and very disappointing for most of us. But if we can’t have a beach holiday in some exotic country, we can try to bring at least a bit of that spirit and feel in our bathrooms. The combination of white and blue usually takes our minds straight to a summer resort in sunny Italy or Greece. You could add a temporary wall or floor covering. There are many creative designs with exotic and relaxing views. Have a look online and choose your best pick that makes you happy.

Colours can do wonders in your environment. It’s also important to mention that colours alone will not be enough to keep you in a good mood and in good health. Decluttering your living space is essential for both your mental and physical wellbeing. Follow our social media and blog updates to get more ideas how to effectively spring clean your home and organise your rooms.

What is Professional Home Organisation

Have you ever heard of professional home organisers? Well, it’s a relatively new profession in the UK, but very popular in the USA now. The most famous home organiser is perhaps Marie Kondo, who also has her own Netflix show now. In simple English words, home organisation is decluttering and tidying up your space to look neat, inviting and liberating. It is a hot new service some professional cleaning companies have started to offer across the UK and of course, we are one of them.

But this article is not about our service. We aim to give you valuable information and help you decide whether you would need professional help in revamping your home without making major refurbishment changes.

What does Home Organisation Include

That’s probably the most frequently asked question. And rightly so. There is a lot of confusion on what to expect when you book a professional home organisation service.

First and foremost, it involves minimal cleaning. You definitely shouldn’t be expecting a deep clean of your home, unless you have booked this separately. A home organiser is there to bring order, create systems and create space in your property.

The expert will go through all of the rooms in your home, including the pantry, laundry room and the closet. The clutter will be taken out and the items in each space will be organised using colour, label or other system. The goal is to be able to find anything you need effortlessly and quickly.

The home organiser will go over your vision for your home environment if you have one and suggest the best ways for this to be achieved. If you are clueless how to create more space and arrange your rooms in an intuitive manner, the professional will be able to give various options. Some people don’t even need those conversations at all. They just hire the organisers to come and work their magic. No questions asked. In the end, it’s all up to you how you want to approach a project like that.

When can you Book a Home Organisation Service

The short answer is anytime. Most people, however, book this service when they are moving into a new home. Moving houses, especially for big families can be extremely stressful and time consuming. Hiring a professional organiser to unpack and arrange all items in your new home is definitely a smart decision. If you are booking this service with a cleaning company you can combine it with an end of tenancy cleaning for your previous property and a move-in clean for the new one. Afterall, a fresh start deserves to be truly fresh!

How is Home Organisation Service Charged

In most cases home organisers will charge you by the hour. The rate is higher than regular cleaning service. Some professionals and companies, however, may have different packages with fixed prices and features.

Home organisation is not just a trend. It is actually an essential service for a person’s wellbeing. Science has proven that a tidy, free of clutter environment benefits mental health and increases productivity. A smart move for everyone who wants to be successful!

Summer Cleaning Checklist

Summer is finally and undeniably here. That’s very exciting, but it also means you have to put some more effort into cleaning your home. Although hot temperatures are bad for viruses and we can take a breather from the infamous COVID-19 spread of infections, bacterias thrive in warm and humid weather. Planning a holiday soon or opting for a staycation, either way you will have to roll up your sleeves and swipe the dirt away. And since everyone knows checklists are much easier to follow, we’ve prepared a summer cleaning checklist by room for you.

The Living Room

We always start from the top and work our way to the bottom. So, you should complete these tasks in the following order.

  • Remove all cobwebs from the ceiling corners and walls.
  • Dust the light fixtures.
  • Clean the inside of the windows.
  • Wipe clean all doors, door handles, sockets and light switches.
  • Spot clean the walls.
  • Dust and wipe all hard surfaces.
  • Wash the couch cushions and clean the upholstery if you know how to safely.
  • Sort out all clutter and put in bags for charity or disposal.
  • Wipe clean the skirting boards and pay attention to the edges.
  • Vacuum or mop the floor.

The Kitchen

The kitchen will take you quite a long time to finish, but it is absolutely crucial you leave it spotless for the summer.

  • Empty the pantry and the dry cupboards. Dispose of all food past its expiration date.
  • Empty the fridge and defrost if needed.
  • Wipe clean all shelves and sections in the fridge.
  • Wipe the shelves and the cupboards inside and out.
  • Disinfect the handles.
  • Clean the oven.
  • Clean the stoves.
  • Clean the dishwasher.
  • Wipe and disinfect all working tops.
  • Wash and disinfect the sink.
  • Empty the bin and disinfect if needed.
  • Mop and disinfect the floor.

The Bathroom

The bathroom is the other top priority on your summer cleaning checklist. High hygiene standards in that place are extremely important.

  • Dust and wash the air vents or windows.
  • Remove any cobwebs from the ceiling or walls.
  • Scrub the shower cabin, shower head, bathtub and the toilet.
  • Scrub the tile grouts.
  • Wipe all hard surfaces.
  • Wipe the vanity inside and out.
  • Wash and disinfect the sink.
  • Empty the bin and sanitise.
  • Wash and disinfect the toilet brush.
  • Mop and disinfect the floor.

Bonus: Add a scented candle or diffuser with essential oils to spread fresh and energising aromas.

The Bedrooms

If you were hoping for less work in the bedroom, we would have to disappoint you. There’s definitely a lot to do.

  • Remove all cobwebs from the ceiling and walls.
  • Spot clean the walls.
  • Wash the windows from the inside.
  • Wash the curtains.
  • Wipe and dust all hard surfaces, including light fixtures, sockets and light switches.
  • Declutter and rearrange your closet.
  • Wash all the bedding, including the pillows and duvet.
  • Dust any air vents.
  • Wipe clean the skirting boards.
  • Vacuum or mop the floor.

To finish off your summer cleaning checklist, complete these outside tasks:

  • Wash the windows from the outside.
  • Wash and clean the patio.
  • Mow the grass and clear the garden.
  • Declutter and rearrange the garage and/or the garden shed.
  • Wash all outside furniture.

Sounds like fun? Get to work. But if you think that’s too much for you, we don’t mind stepping in.

Steps to Effective Spring Cleaning During the Lockdown

One of the main benefits of lockdown is that now we have enough time to do a thorough spring clean of our homes. This is actually very important during a period of a global pandemic, because your home needs to be clean and sanitised at all times. It is also a great opportunity to get rid of things you don’t need or rarely use.

The Kitchen

We would recommend starting from the kitchen, because this is the place with most appliances and often needs a lot of sanitising and decluttering.

Step 1. Begin the process of oven cleaning. It takes some time, so you should start by soaking the racks in warm soapy water and applying oven cleaner to the inside of the oven. This would need 30-60 minutes to start acting.

Step 2. While you are waiting for the oven cleaner to work and the racks to soak, take everything out of the fridge and wipe it inside and out. Throw away everything that may have passed its expiry date.

Step 3. Take everything out of the cupboards and the pantry. There might be stuff that has sat there for too long and it has to go. Wipe and disinfect your cupboards inside and out. You could even use the vacuum cleaner to get rid of any spillage or cobwebs.

Step 4. By now your racks should be ready to be scrubbed and the oven cleaner would have done its magic. Wash the racks and let them dry. You could use an old toothbrush to scrub any burnt on and other greasy pieces. Wipe the oven with a sponge and warm soapy water.

Step 5. Soak your pots and descale the kettle. You can use white vinegar to get rid of any calcium build-up and to give that new shine to your pots.

Step 6. Scrub the stoves and wipe all working surfaces with antibacterial wipes. Rearrange any plates, glasses or jars in the cupboards if they are looking cluttered.

Step 7. Wash your soaked pots and pans and let dry.

Step 8. Mop the floor with a disinfectant.

Your kitchen is now good as new!

The Bathroom

Next comes the bathroom. That’s another place that you can never clean too often and it needs special attention.

Step 1. Descale the shower head and the shower cabin door or the bathtub. Apply apple cider vinegar or a limescale remover on the problem areas and let it sit for about half an hour.

Step 2. Apply a toilet cleaner to the toilet bowl and let it act.

Step 3. Take everything out of the cabinets and vanity. There’s usually quite a lot of stuff that has expired without you noticing. All those face creams you use close to never should also go. Wipe the cabinets inside and out.

Step 4. Wipe the walls in the bathroom. They too need some cleaning attention. If there is a radiator in the bathroom, this should be cleaned as well.

Step 5. It’s now time to scrub the shower cabin, bathtub and the shower head. Hopefully all hard to get out stains should have softened and it would be relatively effortless to clean them off.

Step 6. Use the toilet brush to clean the toilet. Your toilet brush holder should be cleaned too! Flush the old water that’s in the holder and add new one with a few drops of tea tree oil. It has antibacterial properties, which may help prevent infections.

Step 7. Wipe and disinfect the sink.

Step 8. Mop and sanitise the floor.

You can place a scented candle or a diffuser to give the bathroom a fresher feel.

The Living Room

You will have a lot of work in your living room. Remember spring cleaning involves moving furniture and cleaning behind and under it too!

Step 1. Start by opening the windows to allow fresh air to come in.

Step 2. Take the curtains off and put them to be washed or take them to a dry cleaner. You can also add any washable cushion covers, sofa covers or small rugs.

Step 3. Move the heavy furniture and clean behind and under it using a vacuum cleaner and wipe if needed. Don’t miss the radiators! They need a good scrub and dusting to work properly.

Step 4. Wipe and dust the light fixtures and the skirting boards.

Step 5. Declutter, declutter, declutter. Old magazines, newspapers and stuff you don’t use must go. Books you’ve read and are unlikely to go back to can be donated. Same goes for furniture and souvenirs you don’t want to keep any longer.

Step 6. Think of ways to use your wall space. Get as much free space on the floor as possible.

Step 7. Give your carpet some love. Treat any stains with the appropriate carpet cleaning products. Always check the manufacturer instructions before you do anything to your carpet! You may end up doing more damage than good if you use the wrong product or solution.

Step 8. Mop and disinfect the floor.

Think about rearranging the furniture, adding new colours and using an aromatherapy diffuser to brighten your home and make it a more exciting place.

The Bedrooms

You sleep better when your bedroom is clean, well aired and with minimal clutter.

Step 1. Put all your bedding and curtains for a wash. Items that can’t be washed in the washing machine should be taken to a dry cleaner or you could use a commercial laundry service like the one we offer at Bredon Hill Cleaning Services.

Step 2. Dust and flip the mattress. It will help you sleep better.

Step 3. Dust and wipe the light fixtures, the skirting boards and any furniture.

Step 4. Pay special attention to your closet and wardrobe. It’s time to rearrange it. Winter clothes should go in boxes or at the back. Bring forward the light and bright spring and summer outfits. Needless to say you should get rid of everything that is small or you haven’t worn in over a year. Donate it to a charity shop or anyone you know may be needing some good quality clothes.

Step 5. Clean the area behind and under the bed and the bed stands.

Step 6. Wipe and dust the radiators.

Step 7. Vacuum the floor or mop and disinfect if it is a hard floor.

Step 8. Allow fresh air to circulate and wipe the windows inside and out.

Adding a lavender scented candle to your bedroom is a great touch. It will help you relax and calm your mind.

During your spring cleaning you should pay attention to your windows and clean them both inside and out. Your garden, shed and garage may also need decluttering and tidying up.

Usually spring cleaning takes a few days for non-professionals. But it could be a great bonding experience for the whole family.

Alternatively, if you feel it is too much work and something you would absolutely not enjoy, we are ready to step in and get it all done in just one day. Our cleaners are trained to practice all safety measures during a lockdown without this affecting the quality of their job.
