Living Room Cleaning Tips

Living Room Cleaning Tips

Isn’t it nice to get home and enjoy a relaxing, welcoming and cosy atmosphere? That’s usually achieved best in a well maintained and tidy living room. It’s where you spend the special moments with your family and welcome guests. So, how can you turn any living area into an amazing sanctuary of joy, laughter and good vibrations? We have some great living room cleaning tips that can just do the trick.

Regularity is Key

Nothing beats regular cleaning of your living space. You know this is an area where a lot happens and therefore needs constant care. Open the windows every day for at least 30 minutes to improve the air quality and vacuum the floor every other day. Dusting furniture and spot cleaning the floor and glass surfaces once a week is a good idea.

Don’t Miss a Deep Clean

Your living room needs a deep clean at every change of season, no matter how diligent you are with your regular weekly and daily chores. Deep cleaning the living room ensures the environment is healthy, pest infestation is less likely to occur and your home benefits from a fresh new energy. During the process you will focus on more than what you usually do. Windows need to be cleaned, curtains, cushions and throws washed, skirting boards properly wiped and disted.

Declutter

Decluttering is an essential part of effectively cleaning the living room and turning it into a calm and inviting place. Unnecessary items stacked in different parts of the place make it look stuffy and uncomfortable. By creating more physical space in your living area, you also create space for growth in any aspect of your life.

The Carpets Need You

Living room carpets are often in need of TLC. Something gets spilt, someone brings dirt from outside or your pet has a little accident. But even if your carpet appears perfectly clean, know that you still need to have it professionally washed every 6 months. This is to protect yourself and your family from potential diseases and allergies.

Organise and Use Colours to Lift up Mood

Organisation systems in living rooms really make a difference in the way those spaces look and feel. There is plenty of inspiration you can find on Pinterest or in some of our Instagram posts. Colour therapy is also a good way to keep your spirit up when you spend a long time at home. See what’s trendy this season or simply choose the colours that make you happy and relaxed, and add them to your living room interior.

Bring Out the Essential Oil

Speaking of mood and vibes, nothing works better than essential oils. For the living space choose cheerful and vibrant scents like peppermint, lemon, grapefruit or cinnamon. You should also know that essential oils have many healing properties and can be used not only as natural air freshener, but also as health protectors and sanitisers.

Do you have plans to change the way your living room looks and feels this autumn? We’d love to hear all your ideas. And if we can help speed up the process with our professional domestic cleaning services, we will be simply over the moon!

bathroom tips and tricks

Bathroom Cleaning and Organisation Tips

How is your bathroom looking recently? The truth is, many families find it hard to maintain bathrooms in a clean, organised and healthy condition. While cleaning and disinfection are absolutely essential, good organisation is also crucial. Here are some tips on how you can transform and fully enjoy your bathroom this summer.

Decluttering Comes First

Clutter in the bathroom is a potential health risk. The more empty bottles and unnecessary items you keep there, the more chances bacteria and mould have to inhabit the place and spread. Make sure you dispose of any product packaging that is no longer in use. It is important to have as much empty space as possible. It makes cleaning easier and sanitisation more effective.

Utilise Vertical Space

Do not put any personal hygiene products on the floor of the shower cabin or on the side of the bath. Utilise any vertical space you have in the bathroom instead. There are hundreds of options for item organisation in any big supermarket chain or home and furniture shops. Whether it is something you mount on the wall or simply hang on the shower cabin door, it will make a major positive difference.

Keep facial products and scrubs in the vanity cabinet. This will minimise the humidity that gets to these items and preserve their quality for longer.

Take 5 Minutes After Each Shower

Here’s a tip for the lazy cleaners. Bathrooms usually require a lot of scrubbing to look good. But if you take 5 minutes after each shower to quickly spray and wipe the glass and the cabin/bath, you can minimise the heavy scrubbing during a regular bathroom clean. There are limescale and hard water sprays you can use effortlessly. They are usually widely available in most supermarkets.

Weekly Cleans are Essential

The bathroom is one of those places that requires regular care. It needs cleaning at least once a week. If you let it go for longer, the workload doubles and sometimes triples. Not to mention the huge health risk you are taking for you and your family. There are thousands of germs that inhabit your bathroom every single day and consistent disinfection is more than necessary.

Less is Always More

Adopting a minimalist approach when it comes to your bathroom is always best. Don’t stack the shelves. Don’t add more towels than you need. Keep it all tidy. The less stuff you can see when you enter the bathroom, the more relaxing your experience will be while you are there. Diffusers with essential oils, a crystal or a couple of scented candles are a great addition to the decor. Just make sure you are not overdoing it.

How do you organise your bathroom? Do you prefer to have many products within your reach while showering? Or, perhaps, you enjoy that feeling of minimalistic and natural environment without too much clutter?

cleaning habits

Easy-to-build Habits to Minimise Cleaning

Easy-to-build Habits to Minimise Cleaning

Easy-to-build Habits to Minimise Cleaning

Leaving all the cleaning until the end of the week is not always the best strategy. It actually creates more work and can surely be exhausting. That said, building some basic daily habits can by far minimise the amount of cleaning needed at once.

1.  Tidy up before bed

No one likes waking up in a messy house. It can spoil your mood for the entire day. Make it a habit to tidy for 5-10 minutes every evening before bed. Pick up toys and other items from the floor, clear the sofa and other furniture or things that do not belong there. If you have children, you can get them involved. It’s always best to build those habits from an early age.

2.  No messy clothes lying around

This is probably a common scene in the average teenager’s room - clothes, both clean and dirty, lying all over the place. Well, some adults are guilty of this too. Make sure all clean clothes are always folded and put away in the closet. Get laundry baskets for the dirty ones to always keep them organised.

3.  Vacuum daily

Dust and microorganisms build up in your home every single day. Make sure you run the vacuum daily for just 15-20 minutes. It will help you maintain your space fresh and also extend the life of your carpet.

4.  Wipe off spills and spots immediately

Stains become much harder to remove when they’ve been left to set for a long time. As soon as you spill something, or you see a stain treat it. It will save you the effort of rigorous scrubbing and sometimes it could be the only way to prevent permanent damage to the surface.

5.  Don’t let the dishes pile up

Who feels like washing the dishes immediately after dinner, right? Pretty much no one. But it is important to never let the plates and cooking utensils pile up. Whether you choose to do a quick wash before bed or early in the morning, just make sure it is done. If you have a dishwasher, it is even easier.

6.  Speed-scrub the bath/shower cabin after a shower

It may sound like something that would take time and effort, but actually it won’t. As soon as you take your morning shower, gently scrub any stains you see in the bath or shower cabin. It will prevent them from setting and when it’s time for a thorough bathroom cleaning you will have less to do.

7.  Don’t wear shoes in the house

Wearing shoes in the house can significantly shorten the life and worsen the condition of your carpeting. Also, from a health point of view, it is best to leave the shoes you went out with at the doormat. That way you won’t bring in any germs you picked on the streets. It’s nice to have a shoe cupboard, so you can keep things organised.

8.  Introduce an organised system

Speaking of organising, introducing systems in your home could be a total game changer. You can use cupboards, labels, colours and a ton more to keep everything neat and tidy. Not only it looks a lot more appealing, but it also minimises the need for cleaning and the time you spend trying to find something.

9.  Do laundry daily

Dirty clothes can pile up pretty quickly, especially in large families or those with young children. Make every day a laundry day to save yourself the struggle of doing 5-6 rounds over the weekend, which sometimes may not even be enough to clear that huge pile!

10.              Never miss a spring clean

Spring cleaning is very important, and it should be done at least twice a year. If you want to minimise your regular cleaning tasks, then don’t miss a deep clean. It’s a perfect opportunity to declutter and get rid of dirt built up in hard-to-reach areas.

how to choose professional cleaner

What to Look for in a Commercial Cleaner

Commercial cleaning is different from domestic cleaning in many ways. So, when you look for a commercial cleaners, you should know what qualities are really important to perform the job well. In many cases they will overlap with those of a good domestic cleaner, but make sure you check all the boxes.

Reliability

It is very important to be able to trust and rely on your commercial cleaner. Every late arrival or failure to provide a service can cause loss of business for you or put your staff in danger. Always hire commercial cleaners with proven track record and other professional recommendations.

Professional Knowledge and Expertise

In some commercial settings like nurseries, schools and restaurants, commercial cleaners need to have specific knowledge and skills in order to provide quality service. Ask for relevant training and experience in cleaning such properties before signing a contract with a provider.

Professional Insurance

Hiring a solo commercial cleaner is not a good idea, because usually they don’t have professional insurance and these are essential to work in a commercial setting. Accidents and injuries happen all the time. You and your company should not be left responsible for the damage that would arise in such situations. Professional cleaning companies that are fully insured are the best choice for commercial cleaning contracts.

Flexibility

A good commercial cleaner is able to provide flexible service. Most of the cleaning usually happens outside of working hours, so depending on your needs as a client, the cleaner should be able to provide early morning or evening cleans. In the case of serviced apartments, top commercial cleaning companies offer round the clock cleaning and maintenance service.

Open to Using Environmentally-friendly Products

As a business you have a social responsibility and higher share at taking care of the environment. When looking for commercial cleaners, go with providers who can offer eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Some people may argue they are not as effective, but regular maintenance and skillful work would ensure your commercial setting is always at a good standard without harming the environment using heavy chemicals.

Seamless and Regular Communication

Communication with your cleaning contractors is crucial. From sharing schedules to organising tasks to be completed and reporting of any issues, you must always be able to reach your cleaners easily and receive a timely response. Miscommunication or lack of it can harm the quality of service and result in losses for you.

We, at Bredon Hill Cleaning Services, have long years of experience in serving commercial properties. We clean local schools, restaurants, pubs and offices. We also specialise in serviced apartments cleaning and maintenance services. For 10 years, we haven’t had an unhappy commercial client. We will be flattered to do business with you too!

13 Things to Get Rid of at the End of Summer

13 Things to Get Rid of at the End of Summer

You probably don't want to think about this, but summer has already gone and now it's time to prepare your home for the colder months. Apart from deep cleaning, which is a great idea at the beginning of autumn, you should consider decluttering. We've put together a list of 13 things you should get rid of at the end of summer.

1. The kids’ summer clothes

Don't store your children's summer clothes. Give them to charity, instead.  Kids grow a lot in the space of one year. You can't expect them to fit into the same clothes next summer. Do yourself a favour and make some much-needed space for their winter clothing.

2. Old toiletries

It’s time to get new toothbrushes, bath sponges and other toiletries. Get soaps and shower gels with more autumn-like scents like cinnamon or green tea to help you get into the mood for the new season.

3. Medicines that have expired

As the weather gets colder, you and your family member are more likely to get sick. Make sure your home pharmacy only contains medicines that have not expired yet. You don’t want to take or give someone else a medicine that's out of date.

4. Old magazines and newspapers

Why would you need old news? Unless, of course the news is about you! Old issues of magazines and newspapers don't serve any purpose, but take up space you can use to put new books or a beautiful family picture.

5. Food that’s gone past its expiry date

When last did you check your cupboard? Most of us forget to check the expiry date of cupboard foods, because usually they last long. Well, long is not forever! Use the opportunity to clear all food items that are no longer safe to eat. Also, it's a chance to restock with some healthy goodies. New season, new you!

6. Chipped cups, glasses, dishes and bowls

While you are in the kitchen, check the state of your plates, cups and glasses. Any time is the best time to have a cup of tea during the autumn.  Don’t take the risk of cutting yourself on a chipped mug. Even if it's your favourite one!

7. Things with missing parts

Stop telling yourself that you’ll find the missing parts or buy spares… It's been a year! Just throw the whole thing away.

8. Damaged clothes

We know some people develop an attachment to particular pieces of clothing, even when they are damaged beyond repair. Maybe it's a precious memory you have with that dress. Fair enough, but it doesn't mean it should stay in your closet! Create a memory box and put that item there, then take it to the attic or the garage.

9. Shoes you don’t or rarely wear

“But what if I need them for an outfit?” We’ve all used that excuse for a pair of shoes. In 95% of the cases they stay untouched. Be a wise person and throw them away.

10. Presents you don’t like or won’t use

You can’t return a gift, but you don’t have to keep it either if you don't like it or need it. Be good to yourself and to others by donating any unwanted items.

11. Junk mail and letters not addressed to you

Moved to a new place recently? You may still be getting the previous occupants' mail. Don't pile it up, if it's been more than a month. Return them to the sender. In regards to junk mail, put up a sign on your door you don't want to receive it and get rid of the items you already received.

12. Paperwork you no longer need

Some documents you need to keep for quite a long period of time. However, others can go straight in the bin. Go through your filing cabinet or folder and dispose of any paperwork that’s no longer needed.

13. Toxic cleaning materials

Invest in the wellbeing of your family and the appearance of your home. Swap the commercial cleaning products, full of toxins, with eco-friendly solutions or DIY mixtures.

Actually, the list is longer, but we leave it to you to decide what else you don't want to keep in your home and in your life with the start of a new season. If you ever need us to help with the cleaning, you know where and how to find us. Happy decluttering!

Closet organisation tips

10 Great Closet Organisation Tips

Aren't you tired of looking for things to wear early in the morning? The problem is not that you don't have enough clothes, it's the fact you can't find what you are looking for. That's a common problem for many people who struggle to organise their closet. Don't worry. It's easily fixable. Here are 10 great closet organisation tips.

Get rid of as many unused clothes as possible

Most of us often by clothes just because we felt like it, not really because we plan on wearing them. Or, we mistakenly took the wrong size and couldn't be bothered returning the item. Eventually, we end up with a pile of clothes we have never worn and have no intention of wearing in the foreseeable future. They clog up the closet and leave us frustrated every time we are trying to find something we actually want to wear.  Say "No" to useless storage fillers and closet blockers! Number one closet organisation rule - gift, sell or throw away anything that hasn't been worn for more than a year or never worn at all. Not only you will release some much needed space for new items, you will also get rid of bad and old energy. So go bravely ahead!

Sort out your clothes by category

Closet organisation can be very easy when you split your clothing by category. Some ideas for categories include - t-shirts, sweaters, jeans, dresses, skirts and so on. During your spring cleaning, use the opportunity to rotate seasonal clothing. Move back the jumpers and sweaters and bring tank tops and summer dresses to the front. Organising your closet by category makes it look neat and tidy.

Sort out your clothes by season

Another approach to closet organisation is dividing your clothes by season. It's similar to organising by category, but makes the seasonal rotation seamless. Once the summer is over, just bring out the autumn colours and items. Of course, there are the all-year-round clothes that we just love to wear in any kind of weather. These will go in a special section, which you can easily access. This approach is very beneficial for providing enough air circulation in your closet and it looks so organised, that you already feel better by just looking at it.

Sweater Care

If you have a small collection of sweaters, it's a good idea to keep it on hangers, so it’s not going to lose shape and crunch. It saves you ironing time and will keep them smelling fresh.

Organise by colour

Many shops organise their displays and shopping floors by colour. There is something really visually appealing in a closet organised by colour. Also, if you are looking for a particular colour outfit, you will easily spot it.

Choose your outfit for next day

Rushing every morning? Here's a really good time-saving closet organisation tip - mount an additional hook on the inside part of the wardrobe door. Choose the outfit you are going to wear in the morning the night before and hang it on the hook. Simple, quick and effective.

Pair the pairs

“Where's my other sock”? - asks your husband every morning before work. "Has the washing machine eaten it again?!" - you wonder... No. But socks can be very annoying because they always manage to get lost somehow. Solve this problem by handling them in pairs at all times. Wash them in pais, fold them in pairs and keep them in the closet in pairs. To make it even easier, get a box to store all the socks so they don't get lost.

Give to charity

Remember we spoke about clothes you don't wear or are unlikely to wear. Have a special box in your closet where you can store good quality clothes that you got tired of or don't fit anymore. Instead of throwing them away or piling them up and blocking your closet, give them to charity. Make space for new energy and new gorgeous clothes.

Get plastic boxes for clothes

If you have children you probably bought at least one of these large plastic storage boxes and stuffed all their toys inside. Smart move, but you know what's smarter? Using those same boxes for closet organisation. You can save a lot of space by putting the out-of-season clothes in them and leaving the current items out. Of course, if you want your closet to look more chic, you don't have to go for the plastic option. Storage boxes come in wooden, cardboard and fabric versions too.

Go beyond your comfort zone

Utilise all available space by putting shelves higher than you can normally reach. Then place the items you use the most on the lower shelves and the ones that are out of season or worn less often on the higher shelves.

Need some practical help with your closet organisation? We can do that for you. Let's talk about it.
