Pre-Christmas Cleaning Checklist

Pre-Christmas Cleaning Checklist

The great news is that despite all the uncertainty in 2020, we will be able to visit and spend Christmas with our families and friends. That’s absolutely fantastic. But also, since you might be hosting a mini (or not so mini) party at your home, deep cleaning before the holidays is back on the table. To make it easier for all of you who want to brace it themselves, we put together a Pre-Christmas Cleaning Checklist.

The Exterior

Ugh! That’s tough, cold and unpleasant. Yes, we know, but you must make sure the facade and the exterior of your home also look presentable. After all, that's the very first thing your guests will see when they arrive. Furthermore, a good clean is essential before you put up all the outdoor decorations and Christmas lights. To be entirely honest, that's probably a job that should always be left to the professionals. There are cleaning companies who specialise in exterior cleaning and they would do a brilliant job.

The Hall

Moving on to the next spot of your guests’ journey in your home - the hall. It’s very important for that place to be well organised, clean and tidy. It is worth setting up a system mirroring that of a cloakroom. Shoes, bags and coats must have designated spaces to go to. Not only to avoid mixing up, but also to minimise the risk of contamination with bacteria and viruses brought from outside.

The Bathroom

The bathroom must be squeaky clean and sanitised before the arrival of your guests. Use antibacterial and virucidal cleaning products prior to the party. Don’t forget you have to do the exact same thing after your visitors leave too.

We also recommend leaving a scented candle or an air freshener in the bathroom to give it a more homely and nice feeling.

The Guest Bedrooms

If your guests are staying over you must get their room in the right inviting and relaxing condition. A deep clean is a good idea, especially if the room is not used most of the time. Wash the pillows and duvets, put fresh linen on, make sure there’s no dust built up on the furniture and ventilate well to allow free flow of fresh air.

Finishing touches like a bouquet of flowers, candles or natural air fresheners with essential oils always go a long way. They could make your guests feel really special and welcome.

The Kitchen

You absolutely cannot skip the kitchen. That’s actually a top priority on your pre-Christmas cleaning checklist whether you are expecting any guests or not. Christmas is traditionally associated with a lot of cooking and none of those meals will taste delicious if they are cooked in a dirty oven or messy stoves. Not to mention the health risks of letting your kitchen go without a deep clean before the holidays.

The Living Room

We know the living room will be the place where the most action happens during the festivities. But we purposely left it last on the checklist because you will be cleaning up until the last minute before your guests arrive. First and most important thing is to create space. So, if you are naturally someone who is prone to cluttering, that has to change now. The more unnecessary stuff you have lying around in your living room, the less space you get to actually have fun with your family and friends.

All this may sound a little overwhelming, especially in such a short period of time. But hey, that’s exactly why we are here! Give us a call and we will do our best to come straight to the rescue!

Why You Need a Deep Clean before the Holidays

Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas will be saved! This year has been so different and challenging, hasn’t it? But if there’s something that no one and nothing can take away from us is the spirit of Christmas holidays. We all hope that we will be able to celebrate with our family members or closest friends and to make it a memorable experience we need to get ready in advance.

Best Time for Deep Cleaning

The best time for getting your home deep cleaned in autumn is before you put your Christmas decorations up. There will be less things to move around and will allow effective dusting. If you by any chance have decorated already, then it might take extra time to do a really good job.

Where to Start From

We always recommend to start at the top and work your way down to the bottom. That means, ceilings and top corners come first. Make sure there are no cobwebs and remove any dust built-ups. Clean walls and ceiling will make it easier to fix some of your Christmas decorations. Continue in a steady pace to the floor. Don’t ignore the hard to reach areas. That’s what deep cleaning is all about!

Why Deep Clean the House before the Holidays

If you are going to have some family or friends over, then your house will be left in a total mess immediately after the Christmas dinner. Well, that’s not a good enough excuse to skip on deep cleaning before the holidays. You don’t want to embarrass yourself in front of your guests with a dirty house. But even if you were spending Christmas with your household alone, a clean home always makes you feel more positive, joyful and cosier.

Apart from all that, deep cleaning comes with its health benefits. Thorough clean in all areas of your home eliminates the risk of bacterial or viral transmission. It also purifies the air, which improves the quality of your sleep and boosts your immune system. Last but not least, reduces the hiding spots for germs and pests that can ruin your festive mood.

DIY or Outsource Deep Cleaning

Perhaps you have been spending more time at home lately and you are willing to try deep cleaning your house on your own. That’s a great idea, especially if you enjoy such activities. However, don’t underestimate the complexity of the task. There’s a lot to be done and it will probably take more time than you originally anticipated.

Of course, if you are still very busy or simply hate cleaning, there’s always the option to outsource to a professional cleaning team. Our cleaners, for example, will get it all done in just a few hours and to perfection. Don’t worry about safety measures - we have them all in place. All you need to do is pick up the phone and give us a call.

moving houses tips

Quick and Painless Tips for Moving House

Moving house soon? Oh that could be such a pain. Especially now, when we are in the middle of a world health and economic crisis. But regardless of the circumstances, life must go on. And changing homes is sometimes part of it. Here are some quick and painless tips for moving to a new house.

Create a Plan

The first thing you need to do when you know you are changing homes is creating a plan and identifying all the things you need to do. For example, updating your address with different institutions and companies, registering with a new GP or dental practice (if you are changing areas) and applying for a school or nursery place if you need to. Then, plan the time you will need to pack your belongings, book a date for your end of tenancy cleaning and settling in your new place. It is a common mistake for people to underestimate the number of days or weeks they will need to complete the process.

Create a List with Packing Tasks

After the plan for action, follows a plan of packing actions. Make a list with tasks per room. It will be easiest to start from the living room or guest rooms. Most of the items there are probably not used that frequently and could be packed first. Your closet and the children’s toys and clothes will follow. Start making your way through the kitchen and the pantry. There will be a lot to move, to dispose of and still to use until it’s time to go.

Arrange an End of Tenancy Cleaning

It could be tempting to do the end of tenancy cleaning yourself if you are trying to save some money, but actually this choice could cost you more than you expected. Make sure you book an experienced professional end of tenancy cleaning team. They will do the job quickly and to a very high standard. Most agencies and landlords are looking for extremely thorough clean at the end of your tenancy. Failure to meet their expectations could lead to losing a big chunk of your deposit.

Moving In Task List

Packing is just the first part of moving houses. Unpacking actually takes longer most of the time. Now that you have a brand new place you want make sure you find the perfect spot for all your belongings. It could take you weeks to settle in if you do it on your own. Why not think about booking a moving in service? Many cleaning companies in the UK, including Bredon Hill Cleaning Services, now offer this option as an extra or a separate service to your end of tenancy cleaning. What we do is take over the unpacking and organisation of your new home. This way, in just a day or two you are completely settled and enjoying a cosy, warm atmosphere, ready to make new memories.

more benefits of ironing

More Benefits of Ironing You Should Think About

More Benefits of Ironing You Should Think About

Now that most of us are back to working from home you probably bother less whether your clothes are neatly ironed. We get that, but apart from professional appearance, ironing brings a lot more benefits you may be overlooking.

Killing Bacteria and Germs

Ironing is the best natural germ killer on fabrics. The high temperature eliminates bacteria, its spores, dust mites and common allergens. In times of a global pandemic, an extra layer of harmless protection for your health is always welcome.

Making Your Clothes Feel Better

Ironing your clothes brings out the softness of most fabrics. Ironed clothes feel more comfortable and pleasant to your body. Shirts have that silky touch after being pressed and winter sweaters become ever so cosy.

Fixing Shrinkage

Mistakes do happen in the washing machine. And although not all of them are fixable, some shrinkage disasters could be rectified with a good old iron and the right technique.

Eliminating Bad Smells

There’s nothing more disappointing than freshly washed clothes that smell disgusting. The reasons for bad odours on fabrics can be many. Sometimes it's due to your drying method - drying clothes indoors or placing them on radiators is not a good idea. Other times, bad smells are simply due to overuse of detergent. Weird, but true! Luckily, ironing could fix that most of the time. Your clothes are not just smooth and soft, but also smell fresh.

Better Sleep

If you have your bed linen ironed you are in for a treat. First of all, your bed sheets are naturally disinfected. Second, they have this smooth and relaxing touch to your skin. Last but not least, the steam from ironing purifies the fabric, which helps people (especially those prone to allergies) breather easier when in bed. Ultimately, that improves the quality of your sleep!

A Good-looking Shirt is Still a Necessity

Although most corporate positions are now based at home, some Zoom meetings still require professional attire. You may be wearing your sweatpants below the desk, but you will need a crisp, freshly ironed shirt to charm the camera and those watching on the other side.

Outsourcing Saves Time

Staying at home doesn’t lighten up the schedule much. Most of us still have a very challenging and busy lifestyle. Household chores often get pushed down on the list of priority and ironing doesn’t even make the list sometimes. Given all the health and feel-good benefits it brings, we firmly believe there has to be a way to get it done. The best solution is outsourcing.

At Bredon Hill Cleaning Services we have been helping our clients with their laundry and ironing without a break even when the first lockdown happened. Our service is designed to fit around your schedule and ease the stress of everyday life. We operate with a collection and drop off service depending on our client’s needs. If you are going shopping you can drive by the office and leave your laundry or items for ironing and get them all clean and pressed in 48 hours. If you have no time at all, we will come collect everything from you, work our magic and drop it back at your door a couple of days later.

things to be thankful for

20 Simple Things to Be Grateful for This Season

With the approach of the festive season we often miss what’s really important and that’s to show gratitude. Gratitude for the little things than build the big picture. To get into the real festive mood, we made a list of 20 simple things to be grateful for this year.

1.  The roof over our heads

Unfortunately, the problem with homelssness is a growing one in the UK. We support charity organisations like Crisis, who take care of homeless people not only over Christmas but all year round. Having a place to live in, regardless of its size is such a blessing we often don’t appreciate enough.

2.  The food on our tables

One third of the entire population of the Earth lives before the poverty line, which means they often have very little or nothing to eat. And here we are (many of us), buying and wasting food we don’t need or won’t eat. It’s wise to be thankful for the meals you and your family enjoy together, even if they aren’t gourmet dishes.

3.  Peace

John Lenon had a dream about a world where there are no wars and everyone lived in peace. While we are still very far away from that utopia, we can be grateful we live in a peaceful country and don’t constantly live in fear for our lives or the lives of our loved ones.

4.  Good health

One of the most common things we neglect is our health. We do it unconsciously for the majority of the time. It’s only when we start feeling discomfort or pain, we realise we haven’t been good enough to our own body. Appreciate your health, it’s fragile and it won’t always be as you know it!

5.  The sunshine

It may be cold outside, but there’s nothing more beautiful and energising than a sunny morning. Even if it’s during the winter! Looking at the sun rays touching the ground or reflecting on clear waters instantly puts you in a good mood and fills your body, mind and soul with positive energy.

6.  Good music

Speaking of being in a great mood, how often are thankful for a lovely jam they put on the radio?

7.  Hugs

If you are a parent of little children, your life may be overwhelming most of the time. You are probably tired, pulled into a hundred different directions and on the verge of your sanity, but just one hug from your little one can make it all go away. Be grateful for those hugs. They don’t last forever.

8.  The Internet

Although we might find many reasons why we should be more careful with what we do online, we can’t deny the huge benefits we have gained and continue to gain since the Internet has been invented. We are able to expand our knowledge, keep in touch with family and friends and work more efficiently. Thanks to the Internet you are now reading this and perhaps reconsidering some of your views on life!

9.  Friends

Life is better when you have friends to walk with you on every journey you take! Even if you have just a handful, make sure you always make them feel appreciated.

10. Freedom

Probably the most underrated thing we have is freedom! We didn’t always own our lives the way we do today.

11. Your parents

If you are one of those people, lucky enough to still have their parents alive, you are truly rich! Don’t miss an opportunity to put a smile on those special people’s faces!

12. Your partner

Relationships are hard, but if you have a supportive partner, challenges are easier to overcome. Show your gratitude to your other half every day.

13. Nature

Our planet is unique and nature has the answers to all of our problems if only we know how to look for them. Appreciate our natural riches and take care of the environment so the generations after us can enjoy what we do during our lifetime.

14. A cup of your favourite hot drink

Busy mornings are usually accompanied by a rushed cup of coffee, tea or another hot drink. How often do we stop for just a minute to savour the taste and feel the satisfaction that comes with it?

15. Technology

Just imagine living 100 years ago with 90% of the technology we use today not existent! Of course, there are some downfalls to living in such a high tech world, but we can’t deny it makes our lives much easier!

16. Your cleaner

Speaking of things (or people) that make your life easier, you should be really grateful for your cleaner. Especially this festive season! There’s a lot of preparation going on before the holidays and twice as much cleaning after! Thank goodness, you don’t have to do it all on your own!

17.Your job

Your job is what allows you to live the lifestyle you have, keeps you warm, puts food on your table and so on. And if you are lucky to have found a job that you love, you should be extremely grateful and consider yourself blessed!

18. Hot shower before bed

Oh, so relaxing! No need for more explanations.

19. Acts of kindness from strangers

Someone smiled at you on the street today? Smile back and thank the Universe!

20. Every breath you take

Be grateful. Period. Your next breath isn’t guaranteed!

how to clean an oven

Great Oven Cleaning Tips Before the Holidays

You can almost smell the holiday season coming with all the favourite meals we enjoy every year. But how would you make that famous roasted turkey with cranberry sauce if your oven is not working properly? Did you know that one of the most common reasons for oven faults is irregular cleaning? Leaving grease and burnt-ons in the oven for too long can cause many problems. Besides, who would like to eat a cake that’s been baked in a dirty oven? Ugh!

Putting your oven in a spotless condition can be a real challenge, but luckily you are reading the right blog! We have some great oven cleaning tips to use before the holidays!

Oven Racks Come [Off] First

As with every other project, when cleaning you have to have a good strategy and follow an effective methodology. First thing you should do is remove the oven racks and place them in a basin or bucket with a cleaning solution, which dissolves grease and burnt-on. If you want to use natural cleaning materials, mix baking soda, vinegar and some water. Let them soak for half an hour. Another way to get the nasties off the racks is spraying them with an oven cleaner and placing them in a sealable plastic bag for about 30 minutes. After that time, just take the racks out and gently scrub with a sponge. They will be as shiny as new!

Time to Spray

While the racks are soaking or in the sealable bag, you can use an oven cleaner to spray the oven from the inside. Alternatively, mix baking soda with vinegar to create a paste and apply to the dirtiest areas in the oven. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then use an old toothbrush to scrub the hard to get places and any stubborn stains. After the development time it should be pretty easy to remove any grease with a sponge or cotton cloth, dampened in warm water.

Clean the Oven Glass

A glass scraper would be extremely useful to clean your oven glass. Alternatively, you can use some baking soda and dishwashing liquid. Apply to the glass and scrub with a toothbrush. If you are lucky enough to own an oven with a removable glass, unscrew it and soak it oven cleaner and warm water solution for half an hour. Then wipe with a clean cotton cloth and screw back on.

Get Rid of the Bad Smells

Cooked fish recently? Well, you better get rid of that smell before you put the cupcakes to bake in the oven! Good news is, there’s a very easy way to do that. Fill a baking pan with water and add a few drops of essential oil of your choice. If you don’t have any oils, a few slices of lemon will do just fine. Then turn the oven on low temperature and let the solution stay inside for up to 2 hours. In the end, you should have a freshly scented oven and if there were any grease stains left, they should be dissolved by the steaming water.

Don’t have the time to go through all that? No worries, we do! Book your oven cleaning appointment with us and get your baking recipes ready!

holiday cleaning hacks

How to Keep Your Home Clean During the Holidays

Christmas is 2 months away, yes, we know. But it will eventually get here and with it comes big family celebrations. We know how much effort you put into making your home look clean, welcoming and cosy, so we wouldn’t want that to go to waste after the holidays.  So, we put together some good tips on how to keep your home clean during the holidays.

Clean as you Decorate

Decorating your home for Christmas is the perfect opportunity to get rid of old stuff you don’t need. You can move the furniture, wipe all surfaces, remove all dust and cobwebs on the ceiling. Many people use fake snow spray on their windows. That’s very pretty but don’t forget to wash your windows before that. Now you have a clean and lovely house, ready to be transformed into a magical Winter Wonderland space. You practically performed deep cleaning, which means between the holidays your cleaning workload is minimised and you may only need to vacuum a couple of times.

Focus on the Living Room and Common spaces

Your cleaning priority will be the living room, kitchen and bathrooms. Those will be the most used areas in your home during the holidays and your guests will have access to all of them. Maintain them always in good condition. Your own bedroom can wait until after the holiday madness.

Use Sofa Covers

You love your sofa, right? Cover it with disposable sofa covers. You can even choose festive patterns and add to the Christmas spirit in your home. Best part is, none of the festive menu items will leave a mark on your favourite and precious family sofa!

Use the Advent Calendar Trick

If you have children, you have a great advantage! Use the Advent Calendar to make them help you with some domestic cleaning chores. Tell them they can have the prize for each day only if they complete a certain task, for example, dust the furniture, clean up their rooms or vacuum the living room. If they do that for 24 days, it could easily become a habit and they would continue doing it even after Santa’s brought the gifts.

Keep the Cleaning Products Close

With all the festive family dinners and parties on the calendar, frequent messes are inevitable. Keep your home clean at that period is having your essential cleaning products within safe reach. Wine on the sofa? Quickly spray it and clean up the stain. Sorted! The minced pie got smashed on the floor? Fix that fast too.

Use the Dishwasher More Often

Christmas = a lot of food, a lot of food = a lot of dirty dishes. Load the dishwasher every night before bed so you have clean plates and cutleries every morning. That way you can peacefully enjoy your morning coffee, watching TV, instead of standing in front of the sink.

Do you have other ideas on how to keep your home clean over the holidays? Please share them with us, we are genuinely interested to learn how you do it.

Ah! One last thing… if you just want to relax for that one most peaceful (and lazy) week of the year, we can take the cleaning off your plate. Make sure you book an appointment quickly before our capacity is full!

oven cleaning tips and tricks

8 Oven Cleaning Hacks You Wish You Knew Earlier

Oven cleaning is often found to be more difficult than cleaning other kitchen or home appliances for the particularly stubborn grease and food stains uniquely found in an oven.

However, oven cleaning doesn’t have to be such a stress; it’s all about learning combinations that can tackle those stubborn stains. That is exactly what we would like to teach you in this article.

1. Before you start the actual cleaning hack

First and foremost, before using any chemicals or home solutions to clean your oven, you should use a paper towel or old cloth to wipe away already loose and solid bits of dirt. You can use a dustpan to collect the bits and then toss them into the bin. This way you allow the cleaning product to have its full effect on stubborn stains you cannot scrub off.

2. Home made solution hack

The most often mentioned oven cleaning hack is to combine vinegar and baking soda until they form a paste. Rub that on greasy oven stains and scrub. This solution should involve much less scrubbing in comparison to using some supermarket cleaning products.

3. Dishwasher tablets hack

Whilst associated with dish washing and not oven cleaning, dishwasher tablets can dissolve burnt-on grease and smaller pieces of food from your oven. Soak half a dishwasher tablet of any brand in warm water and rub it on the stuck-on food or grease. Leave for at least a minute before wiping away with a clean wet towel the paste. With any luck, burnt-on grease and smaller pieces of food.

4. Oven rack cleaning hack

Similarly to the above oven cleaning hack, you can separate and soak your oven racks in a hot bath with added washing powder. This makes it easier to wipe away dirt afterwards. You could try putting them inside your dishwasher for further ease and to take up less vital space.

5. Ammonia cleaning hack

A particularly low-effort oven cleaning hack is to fill a bowl with half a cup of ammonia,

leave it in your (turned-off) oven overnight and wipe away the loosened grime the morning

after.

6. Common household goods hack

Another great and practically effortless cleaning hack that uses common household ingredients is filling a bowl with water and adding two lemons cut in half. Leave that in your turned-on oven set to about 200 degrees for an hour. Similarly, you should be able to wipe away loosened grime while your oven is still warm (although cool enough to touch) with the added bonus of a pleasant lemony scent.

7. Illogical cleaning hack

This may sound counterproductive, but it is actually an oven cleaning hack that surprisingly works! Put some vegetable oil on a paper towel to wipe down greasy stove tops spattered with oil. Weird... but it does the job!

8. Universal cleaning hack

A cleaning hack, not exclusively applicable to oven cleaning, is using a toothbrush dipped in cleaning product to scrub stains instead of using a different scrubbing tool. The toothbrush has softer bristles, which are much less likely to create scratches or damage to your oven (or other home appliances) when used. Toothbrushes are inherently small and long-handled so, also effective in getting to those hard-to-reach spots.
