Is a Solo Cleaner Really the Better Option?

Is a Solo Cleaner Really the Better Option

As a company we have been in the cleaning industry for a decade now, but I, personally, have been working as a cleaner for much longer than that. I know the ins and outs of the job from all different angles. And it concerns me that more households choose to hire a solo cleaner for their home rather than trust a professional company. And the reason I feel this way is certainly not loss of business. Luckily, we have plenty of loyal clients. But I fear that many families who think having a self-employed cleaners is the better option because it seems cheaper on the surface, are simply misinformed.

What’s behind the price per hour?

Some solo cleaners can go as low as £9-10 per hour. I’ve even seen £8 in some areas! At a glance, it sounds great for the average consumer, who would like to save some money. But this is seriously hurting the professional cleaning industry.

There are so many costs for us and benefits to you that you don’t see in the regular cleaning prices cleaning companies charge you. Let’s have a breakdown.

A cleaning company will have to pay salaries to their workers, as well as NI contributions, pensions and holiday and sick pay. Most of the time we would supply cleaning products and equipment when needed, cover the travel costs of cleaners and have an insurance. Time spent in administrative duties, marketing and planning is also part of the equation.

Now, a self-employed cleaner will have almost none of these expenses, but even at that, they lose out more working on their own and charging £10 p/h than working as an employee at a cleaning company. Why? They end up getting paid work for just about 30 hours per week, because they will have to do the admin duties themselves. They will need to subtract the travel cost, which would be around £50. At the end of the day, after calculating all expenses, solo cleaners end up earning less than the national living wage. On top of that, if they are sick or for some reason unable to work, they will lose much more money, because as self-employed they are not entitled to holiday or sick pay.

Now imagine how companies, who need to cover so many other costs would cope with £12, £13, £14 per hour charges. They can’t. It will be nowhere near enough to ensure excellent, reliable, high quality service.

What’s the Extra when you hire a cleaning company?

The main benefit you will have as a consumer when you choose to hire a cleaning company as opposed to a solo cleaner is security and piece of mind.

Companies are required by law to have insurance, which can cover any damage to your property as a result of the provided service. Self-employed cleaners don’t need to cover that requirement and most of them are not insured.

Cleaning companies also vet their staff before they employ them. At Bredon Hill Cleaning Services, for example, we ask all of our candidates to present a DBS check certificate or if they don’t have one we check them upon employment. We train them in-house to make sure they always deliver the service up to our high standards. Many solo cleaners do not have clearance to work, however, they do it because their clients don’t require any background checks.

If your cleaner is sick or unable to come for the day, your house remains unclean, which could be a significant inconvenience for some households. However, when incidents like that happen and you’ve chosen a cleaning company, the majority of times, you will be sent a replacement and the job still gets done.

All of us, who have build a cleaning business and boost the economy by creating working spaces are often questioned when we charge the appropriate price for our services. No, we are not trying to live a luxurious life, travel abroad on holidays all the time and stack money in our bank accounts. We are simply trying to provide you the quality service, reliability and professionalism you deserve.

Yes, it won’t be £10 per hour, but it will be worth every penny!

Kitchen Cleaning Hacks

  1. Use baking paper to protect your oven from messy cooking.  That way you won't have to scrub grime, grease and burnt-on. For maximum prevention, use baking paper under and over the oven racks to minimise any spillage of sauce or other liquid.
  2. Are you tired of scrubbing pans and pots with burnt-on? You don't have to anymore! Pour water and vinegar inside and let it boil on the stove. Then add some baking soda. Once the liquid cools down, simply wipe off the debris.
  3. Freshen up your microwave by putting a damp sponge in it for 2 minutes. Then wipe the walls of the microwave with it. Or, place a bowl of water and squeezed lemon in the microwave and run it on full power for 3-4 minutes. Then just wipe with a clean sponge.

Bathroom Cleaning Hacks

  1. Scrubbing faucets is hard work. Instead, rub a lemon on them for a minute or two and then wipe away the dirty spots with minimal effort.
  2. Don’t stress yourself with limescale! Here's an amazing cleaning hack for shower heads. Use a plastic bag filled with water and vinegar. Put the shower head inside and secure with a rubber band. Wait for half an hour and simply wipe off the remains.
  3. Disinfectant wipes are a true blessing for every busy mom! You can use them for work surfaces in the kitchen, to sanitise the bathroom, to polish wooden furniture or even clean the floor.

The Bedrooms and Living Area Hacks

  1. Worried about germs and bacteria in your bedroom? We have an easy solution! Put vodka or other scentless spirit in a spray bottle and spray your mattress. There you go, your bed is now freshly sanitised.
  2. You probably hate the word "play-doh" because you associate it with a huge mess. But did you know you can use it to clean up the mess? Roll the play-doh over a dirty floor, for example, and it will pick up litter and other small particles from it. That's it, simple, easy, quick.
  3. Leave your shoes at the front door to avoid spreading dirt and germs inside the house. Save yourself the struggle of cleaning mud off the carpet. And if you or your family members have hay fever, it is a good way to minimise the pollen and allergens brought into your home.
  4. OMG, the kids broke a glass! Don’t panic! Pick up the larger pieces and place them safely in the appropriate recycle bin. For the tiny bits use some bread to get them off the floor.

Housework can be really overwhelming, especially when you have so many other commitments and responsibilities. We know that even with the wittiest cleaning tips and hacks, it's hard to cope sometimes. Perhaps you just need a helping hand and Bredon Hill Cleaning Services is here to lend you one. Spring Cleaning in the Autumn | Bredon Hill Cleaning Services

Spring Cleaning in the Autumn | Bredon Hill Cleaning Services

Spring Cleaning in the Autumn

Spring cleaning is traditionally done in March or April of every year and that's where it gets its name from. However, this is actually deep cleaning and as professionals, we recommend having it at least 2 times a year. In some cases, even more often. Furthermore, there are some specific benefits of doing spring cleaning in the autumn.

Keeps you in a good mood

With the summer waving goodbye and all of us returning to work, it's easy to feel a little bit down and maybe even sad. Autumn often sees a rise in cases of depression. Having spring cleaning at your home or even doing it yourself can lift up your mood and bring you satisfaction. Your living area will look fresh and tidy, which stimulates positive feelings and brain activity.

Keeps you healthy

Autumn is the season of flu and all sorts of viruses and bacteria. You can germ-proof your home with deep cleaning. A professional cleaner will perform a really thorough clean, moving small furniture, disinfecting the bathroom and kitchen working areas and washing the windows from the inside. It's a lot more work than a regular domestic cleaning service but it is totally worth, especially from a health protecting point of view.

Keeps the spiders away

Early autumn is the mating period for spiders, so that's why you see them crawling everywhere. One of the best ways to get rid of them is deep cleaning your home. They love hiding in corners or behind furniture in dark and safe places. Vacuuming behind the sofa or other heavy bits you wouldn't normally move, should be effective. Also, spend some time cleaning the skirting boards and windows!

Keeps the clutter out

Spring cleaning is often associated with decluttering. It is a brilliant idea to declutter your home right before the cold weather settles in. Arrange your home in a cosy and inviting manner, use warm colours to decorate. Re-organise your kitchen and make sure the tea and hot chocolate take the front row in the pantry. Finally, make space for the fluffy winter sweaters and cardigans, putting the light summer clothing at the back of the closet.

Not sure you can cope with deep cleaning on your own? We get it, after all you are busy and all you want after a long day at work is to put your feet up in a nice and calming homely atmosphere. That's why you have us and we are just a phone call or an email away. Let us do the cleaning, you enjoy the results.

13 Things to Get Rid of at the End of Summer

13 Things to Get Rid of at the End of Summer

You probably don't want to think about this, but summer has already gone and now it's time to prepare your home for the colder months. Apart from deep cleaning, which is a great idea at the beginning of autumn, you should consider decluttering. We've put together a list of 13 things you should get rid of at the end of summer.

1. The kids’ summer clothes

Don't store your children's summer clothes. Give them to charity, instead.  Kids grow a lot in the space of one year. You can't expect them to fit into the same clothes next summer. Do yourself a favour and make some much-needed space for their winter clothing.

2. Old toiletries

It’s time to get new toothbrushes, bath sponges and other toiletries. Get soaps and shower gels with more autumn-like scents like cinnamon or green tea to help you get into the mood for the new season.

3. Medicines that have expired

As the weather gets colder, you and your family member are more likely to get sick. Make sure your home pharmacy only contains medicines that have not expired yet. You don’t want to take or give someone else a medicine that's out of date.

4. Old magazines and newspapers

Why would you need old news? Unless, of course the news is about you! Old issues of magazines and newspapers don't serve any purpose, but take up space you can use to put new books or a beautiful family picture.

5. Food that’s gone past its expiry date

When last did you check your cupboard? Most of us forget to check the expiry date of cupboard foods, because usually they last long. Well, long is not forever! Use the opportunity to clear all food items that are no longer safe to eat. Also, it's a chance to restock with some healthy goodies. New season, new you!

6. Chipped cups, glasses, dishes and bowls

While you are in the kitchen, check the state of your plates, cups and glasses. Any time is the best time to have a cup of tea during the autumn.  Don’t take the risk of cutting yourself on a chipped mug. Even if it's your favourite one!

7. Things with missing parts

Stop telling yourself that you’ll find the missing parts or buy spares… It's been a year! Just throw the whole thing away.

8. Damaged clothes

We know some people develop an attachment to particular pieces of clothing, even when they are damaged beyond repair. Maybe it's a precious memory you have with that dress. Fair enough, but it doesn't mean it should stay in your closet! Create a memory box and put that item there, then take it to the attic or the garage.

9. Shoes you don’t or rarely wear

“But what if I need them for an outfit?” We’ve all used that excuse for a pair of shoes. In 95% of the cases they stay untouched. Be a wise person and throw them away.

10. Presents you don’t like or won’t use

You can’t return a gift, but you don’t have to keep it either if you don't like it or need it. Be good to yourself and to others by donating any unwanted items.

11. Junk mail and letters not addressed to you

Moved to a new place recently? You may still be getting the previous occupants' mail. Don't pile it up, if it's been more than a month. Return them to the sender. In regards to junk mail, put up a sign on your door you don't want to receive it and get rid of the items you already received.

12. Paperwork you no longer need

Some documents you need to keep for quite a long period of time. However, others can go straight in the bin. Go through your filing cabinet or folder and dispose of any paperwork that’s no longer needed.

13. Toxic cleaning materials

Invest in the wellbeing of your family and the appearance of your home. Swap the commercial cleaning products, full of toxins, with eco-friendly solutions or DIY mixtures.

Actually, the list is longer, but we leave it to you to decide what else you don't want to keep in your home and in your life with the start of a new season. If you ever need us to help with the cleaning, you know where and how to find us. Happy decluttering!

5 Natural Ways to Spider Proof Your Home

5 Natural Ways to Spider Proof Your Home

It's such a colourful view outside, painted by the warm autumn palette. But along with the falling leaves and crips air, we often get an invasion of crawlies. That's right, it's spiders mating season and they are everywhere! Some people have a genuine phobia and can't stand the sight of the little bug. For others, it's the struggle of having to remove cobwebs from all the corners of the house almost every day. Whatever your case is, you probably don't want them as roommates. Here are 5 natural ways to spider proof your home.

If you live in a house with a garden, you are at a higher risk of spider infestation. These little crawlies will use every opportunity to get in and stay warm. An open window, a door left ajar, a small crack - they'll take advantage. We can give you 2 ideas on how to keep them outside.

1.Horse chestnuts

Horse chestnuts are a natural repellent for spiders. Cut the nuts in half and place them in all 4 corners of the room, as well as on the outside part of the windows.

2. Peppermint spray

Another way to repel spiders is using peppermint spray. You can create it yourself. Dilute 20 drops of peppermint oil into a spray bottle filled with water. Then spray every crack, window frame and door inside your house to keep spiders away. If you think that won't be enough, or won't last long,  dip a cotton ball into the peppermint oil. Place where you think the spiders may enter to make sure they will stay out. Alternatively, if you don't like peppermint, you can use tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil.

If the 8-legged buggers have already moved in, here's what you can do to get rid of them.

3. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous earth is a powder from the fossils of the water creature diatom. It is safe for humans and pets, but it is deadly for spiders. Once a spider crosses over the powder, it penetrates its body and kills it. Then, you will just have to sweep away or vacuum the remains.

4. Vacuum the webs and eggs away

Killing the old spiders, won't do the job completely. They may have laid eggs already. The safest ways to get rid of new spiders is vacuuming. It will suck up any eggs and clean up the cobwebs. If you get a grown spider in your vacuum cleaner bag, release it outside afterwards. It won’t die in the bag and may crawl out again.

5. Keep a tidy home

Spiders love clutter, because it provides enough space to hide. If you clean your home regularly and don't pile items up, you will have less visitations from these crawling creatures.

If you notice that you have an ever-growing population of spiders in your home, this may be a clear sign that there is a serious infestation caused by other pests. What you need to do next is call pest control.

5 Tips to Maintain Your Bedding Fresh and Clean

5 Tips to Maintain Your Bedding Fresh and Clean

We spend a third of our life in bed. This is a place of relaxation and restoration. It only makes sense to put every effort to keep this place nice and neat. But do you know what it takes to maintain your bedding fresh and clean? You can follow our 5 professional tips.

1. Take care of your pillows

Washing the pillows is an essential part of maintaining your bedding fresh and clean. Some pillows are dry-clean only, others can be machine-washed. Use a mild detergent and only put half a dose in the washing machine. Set on 30ºC in a quick wash programme. Take a step further to ensure maximum freshness - rinse once or twice more to get rid of the detergent residue completely. As for the spinning, once won't be enough. Spin twice to make sure you extract the most water. If you are using a dryer, put a tennis ball or two to help the pillows come out soft and full. If drying naturally, leave them for a day under direct sunlight.

2. Wash your bed linen often

Some would argue that the frequency of washing bed linen is personal preference. While we are not judging anyone, we would recommend washing your bed linen at least once every two weeks. It's more hygienic and helps your sleeping environment stay fresh and clean. You should wash your sheets and duvets in warm water – 40-60ºC degrees. Always check the manufacturer label first. Some bed linen is not suitable for washing in domestic environment and can only be dry-cleaned.  Stains can be treated with your preferred stain remover brand. For better results add a scoop of the stain remover inside the washing machine as well.  The last step of maintaining your bed linen fresh and clean is ironing. The heat kills bacteria and other nasty bugs and makes the sheets feel like new.

3.Don't forget to wash the duvet and coverlid

Many people believe as long as their bed linen is clean, the duvet and coverlid don't need that much attention. However, that's not the case. You should wash your duvet at least once a month. Same goes for any throw or coverlid you use. As with the rest of the bedding, you must always check the label before you attempt to wash your duvet. It may require dry-cleaning. If it's ok to wash it at home, use the same programme you would for pillows. For the drying process, also do what you would do for pillows.

4. Daily care gives best results

Did you know our body releases between 150g and 200g sweat a night?  Not very fresh, right? So while you are having your morning coffee and checking social media, why not take out your duvet to get some fresh air for 10-15 min? Opening a window for half an hour before going to bed will also allow fresh air to come in and make your bedroom more pleasant and easier to sleep in.

 5. Use more organic products

Chemicals are dangerous for our health. It's not only what we put inside our bodies, but also what we expose them to. Scientists have proven a connection between cleaning products and detergents and some cancers. To minimise the risk of endangering your health, use more organic products to maintain your bedding fresh and clean.

Keep your home clean during holidays

How to Keep your Home Clean while on Holiday

It's the season of holidays! You are probably going somewhere really nice. Gorgeous hotel, clean rooms, impeccable dining facilities, no housework stress at all. Now imagine coming home to the absolute opposite. Oh, that would be a disaster! Instead of spoiling with your holiday right after you cross your doorstep, make sure you leave your home clean and tidy before you go. And to make it easier for you, we have some easy-to-follow tips on how to keep your home clean while on holiday.

Kitchen and Dining Area

The kitchen and dining area need a lot of your attention before you go on holiday. Run a quick hoover or sweep the floor, especially around coffee tables and other places you eat to remove any crumbs and food residues. It's really important because otherwise you risk infesting your place with ants or other insects. Additionally, you can use a spray to prevent bug infestation. Check all the food you are leaving in the fridge. If it goes out of date within the next few days, throw it away. Make sure all of your appliances are also clean and in good order. You don't want bacteria to grow on the inside. All this should take you about half an hour.

Bathroom and toilet area

The bathroom will be one of the first places you are going to use after you come back, so you should really clean it up before you go. Use a cleaning product for limescale removal and prevention on all tiles, bathtub or shower cabin. After drying, polish the area with glass polish liquid to stay shiny. Disinfect the toilet and mop the floor. Put a small green plant in the bathroom to make it look more welcoming and add positive vibrations to your environment.

Living room

The living room should be fairly easy to keep clean while on holiday. Dust the skirting boards and wipe most hard furniture. Keep the cushions inside the sofa drawers if possible to prevent discoloration and dust. Close the curtains or shut the blinds. Finally, run the vacuum cleaner.

Bedrooms

Start by opening the windows to allow fresh air into the rooms. Then vacuum and dust the hard surfaces. You can use anti-dust products to prevent dust coming in while you are on holiday.  Light an organic candle while you are still in or leave aromatic sticks before you go. Don't forget to close all windows well after you finish.

Plants & Pets

Plants and pets can be tricky, because they don't always come with you on holiday. If you are just looking after plants, you can leave a spare key to a friend or neighbour to water them while you are gone. If you are not going to be away for too long, watering them before you go should be sufficient. Keep them away from direct sunlight.  If you have pets, you should really arrange for someone to come in every day to check on them and feed them. Alternatively, take your pet to a friend's house or to a pet's hotel.

A few more tips... just before you leave to enjoy yourself, make sure all appliances are unplugged. You can also switch off the sockets to save on your electricity bill. Switch off the boiler too. You can never be too careful, especially if you are going to be away for longer. Put your favourite mugs and things you use often in cupboards to avoid dust build up and having to wash them upon your return.

Have a great summer and an amazing holiday!

Closet organisation tips

10 Great Closet Organisation Tips

Aren't you tired of looking for things to wear early in the morning? The problem is not that you don't have enough clothes, it's the fact you can't find what you are looking for. That's a common problem for many people who struggle to organise their closet. Don't worry. It's easily fixable. Here are 10 great closet organisation tips.

Get rid of as many unused clothes as possible

Most of us often by clothes just because we felt like it, not really because we plan on wearing them. Or, we mistakenly took the wrong size and couldn't be bothered returning the item. Eventually, we end up with a pile of clothes we have never worn and have no intention of wearing in the foreseeable future. They clog up the closet and leave us frustrated every time we are trying to find something we actually want to wear.  Say "No" to useless storage fillers and closet blockers! Number one closet organisation rule - gift, sell or throw away anything that hasn't been worn for more than a year or never worn at all. Not only you will release some much needed space for new items, you will also get rid of bad and old energy. So go bravely ahead!

Sort out your clothes by category

Closet organisation can be very easy when you split your clothing by category. Some ideas for categories include - t-shirts, sweaters, jeans, dresses, skirts and so on. During your spring cleaning, use the opportunity to rotate seasonal clothing. Move back the jumpers and sweaters and bring tank tops and summer dresses to the front. Organising your closet by category makes it look neat and tidy.

Sort out your clothes by season

Another approach to closet organisation is dividing your clothes by season. It's similar to organising by category, but makes the seasonal rotation seamless. Once the summer is over, just bring out the autumn colours and items. Of course, there are the all-year-round clothes that we just love to wear in any kind of weather. These will go in a special section, which you can easily access. This approach is very beneficial for providing enough air circulation in your closet and it looks so organised, that you already feel better by just looking at it.

Sweater Care

If you have a small collection of sweaters, it's a good idea to keep it on hangers, so it’s not going to lose shape and crunch. It saves you ironing time and will keep them smelling fresh.

Organise by colour

Many shops organise their displays and shopping floors by colour. There is something really visually appealing in a closet organised by colour. Also, if you are looking for a particular colour outfit, you will easily spot it.

Choose your outfit for next day

Rushing every morning? Here's a really good time-saving closet organisation tip - mount an additional hook on the inside part of the wardrobe door. Choose the outfit you are going to wear in the morning the night before and hang it on the hook. Simple, quick and effective.

Pair the pairs

“Where's my other sock”? - asks your husband every morning before work. "Has the washing machine eaten it again?!" - you wonder... No. But socks can be very annoying because they always manage to get lost somehow. Solve this problem by handling them in pairs at all times. Wash them in pais, fold them in pairs and keep them in the closet in pairs. To make it even easier, get a box to store all the socks so they don't get lost.

Give to charity

Remember we spoke about clothes you don't wear or are unlikely to wear. Have a special box in your closet where you can store good quality clothes that you got tired of or don't fit anymore. Instead of throwing them away or piling them up and blocking your closet, give them to charity. Make space for new energy and new gorgeous clothes.

Get plastic boxes for clothes

If you have children you probably bought at least one of these large plastic storage boxes and stuffed all their toys inside. Smart move, but you know what's smarter? Using those same boxes for closet organisation. You can save a lot of space by putting the out-of-season clothes in them and leaving the current items out. Of course, if you want your closet to look more chic, you don't have to go for the plastic option. Storage boxes come in wooden, cardboard and fabric versions too.

Go beyond your comfort zone

Utilise all available space by putting shelves higher than you can normally reach. Then place the items you use the most on the lower shelves and the ones that are out of season or worn less often on the higher shelves.

Need some practical help with your closet organisation? We can do that for you. Let's talk about it.

furniture maintainance

How to Maintain Your Furniture Clean and Cosy

The furniture is often what makes an ordinary house a true home. The sofa, the chairs, the coffee table and chest of drawers all give your place a specific feel. You want to keep that sensation of cosiness at all times, so we will give you some ideas on how to maintain your furniture clean and cosy.

Upholstery

For upholstered furniture pieces prevention is key. Use a stain guard as a coating on top of your favorite gorgeous sofa or armchair. This service is available from most carpet cleaners for an extra charge. Alternatively, you could buy a stain guard product online.

Slipcovers are great if you have young children or wine is your best friend. Spills happen very often and with slipcovers it's easy to clean up. Just toss them in the washing machine and once they are out, your sofa is as good as new.

Another tip to maintain your furniture clean and cosy is to always have a stain remover closeby. Reaction time is very important when it comes to stains. If your sofa is a light colour, this can be a life saver.

Wooden Furniture

Wooden furniture will require a different type of care. Usually, to maintain them clean, you need to dust regularly with a dry cotton cloth. If it has been a long time since you last dusted, you can also try damp cloth or wooden furniture wipes. Very important thing to remember, neve use aggressive detergent on wooden furniture!

The lacquered surfaces can be cleaner with a polishing agent if necessary. Most furniture pieces would need a water-based, solvent-free detergent. From time to time you should use bio oil to help your wooden furniture take its natural colour and remain clean and cosy. Once per month is sufficient.

Eco-furniture

Eco furniture is easier to clean and maintain than the wooden furniture. This is because it is flat and there are no small cracks like natural wood has. Use a duster or clean with a dry cloth to remove the dust from the surface. Then, you can apply directly a light gentle detergent that contains oil. This will give your eco-furniture a great shine and make it look absolutely stunning. Also, it prevents dust building up. It's important to know how to apply these cleaning products correctly to avoid cloudy surface. Always apply oily detergent in light coats, rubbing into the surface. Allow to dry and buff to a clear shine with a soft cloth.

Sometimes your furniture will need professional care. Upholstery cleaning services are quite affordable and provide amazing value for the money you pay. It is worth booking a visit from your local domestic cleaner to assess the condition of your furniture and give you an accurate quote. After all, this is by far the best way to maintain your furniture clean and cosy, looking exactly the same way as the day you bought it.

us as individuals and also to the society,How to Recycle Correctly and Hustle-Free

How to Recycle Correctly and Hustle-Free

Recycling brings many benefits to us as individuals and also to the society. It saves costs, resources and most importantly the environment. International reports suggest that if we as a humankind don't take recycling seriously right away, there will be disastrous consequences just 30-50 years from now. We know that sometimes the process of recycling gets a little complicated and many people get confused. That's also the main reason why so many households still don't recycle properly. Today, we want to give you a brief explanation on how to recycle correctly and hustle–free.

Previously, you may have attempted to recycle your old water bottles, magazines, useless plastics, and other household junk, but you found it complicated, so you just gave up. It happens to many people. The main reason for this is because there is lack of understanding of the easiest and fasted ways to recycle household rubbish. Also, you are probably missing structure to your recycling activity. Let's fix that.

Prepare for Recycling

The first step is preparing items for recycling. As you know, all items cannot go in the same place. Thus, it requires organisation and separation of items and materials. For example, all bottle caps should be placed at one side and all plastic bottles without caps should be placed separately. Remove all water and residue from the bottles. Then, all bottles, caps, and other appropriate items for recycling need to be packed in different bags or containers. In the UK, every local council has different requirements and collection procedures. Some may ask you to put the plastic water bottles in a container, others may be fine with you putting them in a white recycling bag. Make sure you check the requirements of your council or opt for a domestic cleaning service. Professional cleaners are well aware of how to recycle correctly and efficiently.

Of course, different materials will require different recycling procedures. There are specific ways in which you dispose of electronic devices or batteries. You can't just put them into the recycling can. Most stores selling mobile phones have special containers for recycling batteries and electronic devices. Some even pay you if you bring your device! Just make sure you have backed-up all your data safely on the cloud or other virtual storage before you recycle your phone, tablet or computer.

The Recycling process

Now that you know different materials can't be put in the same bags or containers is good to know where each of these materials go.

The plastics, as we said, will have to be separated from paper and put into a specific container or a bag.

Cardboard and takeaway boxes go in another white recycling bag. Make sure you get rid of all food leftovers before you put the recyclable materials in the bag.

Cans and metal waste products will go in other containers too. The easiest way to get things done quickly, is to have a couple of bins at home with labels for different types of products and materials. This way, when it's time to take out the trash, you don't have to go through it and separate stuff.

When it comes to clothes and shoes, these don't go in the bin and are not collected by the council. You should make arrangements to dispose of them safely. The good news is that many charity organisations leave special recycling bags in your post box, which you can use to store the clothes you don't want. On the bag there is usually information about the collection date and terms.

Food waste is something that must never go in the same place as the recyclable materials. Every household should have a special bucket provided by the council you could use to dispose of any food waste.

As you know, the general waste (mixed materials ant things that are not yet widely recycled like nappies or sanitary products) go in black plastic bags. You should try your best to minimise the general waste and use the correct bins and packaging for recycling.
